For the 1st time in over 40 years, the world’s largest volcano Mauna Loa is erupting. According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory “The eruption began in Moku’āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, on Sunday around 11:30 p.m. HST (4:30 a.m. ET Monday).

Fortunately, at this time, lava flows are contained in the summit area and do not threaten downslope communities, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. For the last 40 years when we think of Mt. Kīlauea because it’s been incredibly active over the last few decades. When you see the amazing photos of lava pouring into the ocean and lava flying into the air, Kilauea is the epicenter. Mauna Loa is the volcano that has left its mark all around Kona. Over 40 years its work has been covered in grass and but its still very much active and today it has come to life. December 1st Update: We’re starting to get some big lava fountains. As high as 80 feet. Lava is moving at 70-80 feet an hour so still no danger for quite a long time. Update Friday December 9th: What a week. Mauna Loa was a thing of beauty but looks to have spared Saddle Road, stopping 1.5 miles out. Lava was moving at approximately 7 feet per hour but now has essentially stopped moving forward. All major infrastructure seems to be safe. Take a look at this beautiful video of Mauna Loa this week

November 30th Mauna Loa Update:
Lava continues to flow. Many miles from any homes or businesses but she is putting on a show. The volcano’s lava has crossed onto an access road, but the eruption still remains on the northeast rift zone. It is still safe to view from a distake. Jacob Vandervelde is putting out the best photos each day . Worth a follow

November 29th Update: Lava looks to be contained to crater and experts think this looks to be the case for a while. Some really good videos coming out.

The eruption continues at the summit of Mauna Loa. All vents remain restricted to the summit area. However, lava flows in the summit region are visible from Kona. There is currently no indication of any migration of the eruption into a rift zone.

The Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for Mauna Loa remains at WARNING/RED.   

HVO is continuing to monitor conditions carefully and will issue additional notices as needed.
